Craig Smith, also known as Satya Sai Maitreya Kali, was a Los Angeles–born musician and songwriter.
In the early 1960s, he performed as part of the house band on the popular variety program The Andy Williams Show. He went on to pen songs that were recorded by Glen Campbell and formed the band Penny Arkade, whose music was produced with the help of members of the Monkees in their home studio.
By 1968, Smith had left Hollywood behind, setting off along the famed Hippie Trail with a guitar slung over his shoulder and a head full of psychedelics. During his travels, however, his outlook shifted dramatically. Convinced he was the reincarnation of both Christ and the Buddha, he adopted the name Maitreya Kali, had a black widow tattoo etched onto his forehead, and declared that he was destined to be king of the world.
When he returned to the United States, the transformed Smith unsettled many of his former peers, and both his career and music slipped into obscurity. Struggling with what appeared to be severe mental illness, he spent much of his later life homeless, ultimately passing away in 2012 without family.
